Why We've Spent 11 Years Teaching Retirement Classes in the Quad Cities True Financial Partners

There’s a moment that happens in almost every classroom.

Someone raises their hand — usually about 45 minutes in — and says something like, “Why didn’t anyone ever tell me this?”

It happens whether we’re teaching a room full of teachers, factory workers, business owners, or retirees. The topic might be Social Security timing strategies or the tax implications of required minimum distributions. But the reaction is almost always the same: a mix of relief and mild frustration that this information wasn’t more accessible sooner.

That moment is exactly why we show up to teach.

It Started With a Simple Belief

For the past 15 years, the advisors at True Financial Partners have been stepping into classrooms across the Quad Cities to teach retirement education courses. 1,500 students have come through those classes — and not one of them had to pay us a dime to be there.

That probably raises a fair question: why?

The honest answer is that education is genuinely core to who we are — not as a marketing tactic, but as a philosophy. We believe that people make better decisions when they actually understand their options. And when it comes to retirement, the stakes are too high for confusion.

Retirement Is Full of One-Shot Decisions

Here’s something most people don’t realize until they’re right in the middle of it: retirement planning isn’t like most financial decisions. You don’t get a lot of do-overs.

When do you claim Social Security? How do you structure your income so you don’t run out? What’s the most tax-efficient way to draw down your accounts? These aren’t questions you can revisit casually in a few years if things don’t go the way you planned. Many of them are permanent.

That’s not meant to be scary — it’s meant to be motivating. Because the people who understand their options make dramatically better decisions than the people who guess, follow a neighbor’s advice, or default to “whenever feels right”.

The classroom is where we try to close that gap.

What We Actually Teach

Our courses have evolved over the years. We started by partnering with local community colleges to teach broader Retirement Survival courses — covering the full landscape of what people face heading into retirement. More recently, we’ve shifted our focus specifically to Social Security, hosting those classes ourselves at a local library.

Different venue, same mission.

We made the shift because Social Security is one of the most consequential decisions a retiree will make — and one of the most widely misunderstood. Did you know there are over 100 different ways for a married couple to claim Social Security benefits? Most people pick one without knowing the others exist. The difference between a good Social Security strategy and a poor one can easily exceed $100,000 over a lifetime.

That’s not a typo.

The Classroom Is an Extension of How We Work

If you’ve ever met with one of our advisors, you’ve probably noticed the visits don’t feel like a sales pitch. They feel more like a conversation — one where we ask a lot of questions, listen carefully, and spend real time making sure you actually understand what we’re recommending and why.

The classroom works the same way. We’re not up there reciting facts from a slide deck. We’re having a real conversation about real concerns that real people bring with them into retirement.

That’s the culture at True Financial Partners. Education first. Relationships always. And a genuine belief that an informed client is a better-served client.

You Don’t Have to Wait for the Next Class

If you’re within ten years of retirement — or already there — and you feel like you’re missing pieces of the puzzle, we’d love to talk. Our first conversations are always complimentary, always pressure-free, and almost always include at least one moment where someone says, “I didn’t know that”.

That’s our favorite part of the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does True Financial Partners charge for their retirement education classes?
Not a penny. The retirement and Social Security classes are completely free to attend — because the goal is making sure you walk away better informed, not signing you up for anything.

What topics do the classes cover?
Earlier courses covered broad retirement planning topics including income planning, investment strategy, and navigating the transition into retirement. Current classes focus specifically on Social Security — including when to claim, how spousal benefits work, and how your timing decision affects your lifetime income.

Where are the classes held?
The original Retirement Survival courses were held at local Quad Cities community college campuses. The current Social Security classes are hosted at a local library — making them easy and accessible for anyone in the area to attend.

Why does True Financial Partners teach retirement classes?
Because the advisors here genuinely believe that people who understand their options make better decisions. It’s the same philosophy they bring to every client visit — and the classroom is just another way to put it into practice.

Can attending a class lead to working with True Financial Partners?
Absolutely — many class attendees have gone on to become clients, and we’d love to talk if that’s of interest. But there’s never any pressure. You’re welcome to come, learn, and leave with nothing more than new knowledge and a clearer picture of your retirement.

What is the difference between retirement planning and a Social Security strategy?
Retirement planning is the broad process of preparing your finances for life after work — covering income, investments, taxes, healthcare, and estate planning. A Social Security strategy is one specific component of that plan, focused on optimizing when and how you claim your benefits. The two are closely connected — your Social Security timing can significantly affect your tax situation, your income plan, and how long your other assets need to last.
